Changes for version 2.3:
The reason for this revision is to support the new tax brackets for 1994.
There are now 5 tax brackets instead of 3, so I had to allow for the
changes. Also, a few minor bugs were fixed.
The FEDTAX.DAT file that is included on this disk is for 1994. ONLY USE THE
FEDTAX.DAT FILE THAT IS INCLUDED ON THIS DISK WITH VERSION 2.3. DO NOT TRY
TO USE ANY EARLIER FEDTAX.DAT FILES WITH THIS PROGRAM!
Changes and additions for version 2.2:
The PAY_LOG.DAT File:
On the Configuration screen you now have the option of creating a Payroll
Log file. This file contains the pay amounts and the number of hours worked
as well as the pay date and period ending date for the check. The 'Payroll
Log' entry in the Reports menu allows you to print a report (for each
employee) which details all the checks that were written for this employee,
and total amounts for all deductions, etc. You may select either short or
long format for the report. The short format just lists the dates, total
hours worked, and the gross and net pay amounts. This only takes one line
per entry. The long format also lists all deductions and individual amounts
for regular, overtime, vacation and holiday hours. The long format uses 12
lines per entry. The only items that will show up on the Payroll Log report
are the ones contained in the PAY_LOG.DAT file. Therefore, any checks you
have written before you started using version 2.2 will not be listed. With
a little effort, you could start the year over and write all those checks
again so they would be included but I doubt it is worth the trouble. I
realize that this is somewhat of a duplication of the Archive Payroll Data
feature, but it doesn't have as much detail, therefore it doesn't take up as
much disk space. If you have plenty of space, you may want to use both
options. Keep in mind that the PAY_LOG.DAT file is only modified when you
print the checks. It only adds the records if the employee has been paid
and his/her check is being printed for the first time. The Archive option
saves a copy of the whole PAYROLL.DAT file each time you save the payroll
data. Both options have their strengths and weaknesses.
There are no changes in the data files for this version, so you may just
copy the PAYXPERT.PRG and PAYXPERT.RSC files to your working directory for
version 2.1. Be sure to copy BOTH files since the .RSC file from any
version other than 2.2 will not work and may cause terrible things to
happen.
The V20toV21.PRG file is included for those of you that still have version
2.0. You MUST use this program first if you have version 2.0! Please read
the V20toV21.DOC file for details. DO NOT run the conversion program on any
version other than 2.0! It WILL trash all your data files!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes and additions for Version 2.1:
Multiple State Taxes.
Payroll Expert now supports state tax deductions for 2 states, or if you
prefer, 1 state and 1 city tax deduction. The alternate tax tables are used
for the other city/state. There is a new button on the State tax table
screen that toggles the display between the main and alternate tax tables.
From the Employee Options screen you may configure each employee so that
either the main or the alternate tax tables, or both, will be used when
calculating pay for that employee.
Additional State Withholding
As with the federal tax, you may now specify an additional amount of state
tax to be withheld each pay period. This applies to either the main or
alternate state tax.
No Alternate Federal Tax Tables
The alternate federal tax tables are no longer used. There was really no
need for this option anyway.
Hot Keys
Most of the menu items and some of the dialog buttons now have keyboard
equivalents. The more commonly used items are accessed with the function
keys and ALT-key combinations. The less used items are accessed with Shift-
Function key combinations. To toggle between the Employee Data screen and
the Pay Amounts screen use ALT-T. To display the previous or next employee,
use the Control key with the left or right arrow key. The other key
combinations are listed in the menus.
Print Reports To Disk
If you choose, you may output all of the reports to disk instead of the
printer. They will be given appropriate filenames with the extension .RPT.
This option is available from the Reports menu.
Archive Payroll Data
From the Configuration menu, you now have the option to automatically create
a duplicate of the PAYROLL.DAT file whenever the payroll data is saved. If
you select this option, the file will be created with a filename in the
format: PEmmddyy.DAT, where mmddyy is the date in month/day/year format.
You may enter the path where you would like to save the archive files. This
way you can keep records for every time you use the program.
Active/Inactive Flags For Employees
From the Employee Options screen you may set an employee's status to
inactive. For example, if that employee no longer works for you, you
probably don't want to see his/her data every time you page through the
employees. Also, if an employee is inactive, they can not be paid. From
the Configuration screen you may choose whether or not to display the
inactive employees. You may still display an inactive employee by using the
Find Employee function, even if the configuration is set up to not display
inactive employees. Because of this new feature it is now possible to pay
all of the active employees at one time instead of having to pay them each
individually. Just select Pay All Employees from the Employee menu and if
you choose, the pay will we calculated for each and every one of the active
employees, based on their hours, etc. Now it's even easier on payday!
.DAT File Changes
Due to all these additions, I was forced to change the data file format
again. A conversion program is included to convert from version 2.0 to
version 2.1. If you have an earlier version, you will need the version 2.0
package to convert the older files to version 2.0 first.
Enjoy!
